Chapter 24
âHeâs lying, and there are so many holes in his story that you could drive a truck through it,â Adam said the following morning when Julian and Tony joined him at the whiteboard in the incident room. Both men had dark rings beneath their eyes, but they appeared sharp and alert. âHowever, he knows enough that he must have been there when Marshall was killed. The forensics lab has his clothes for testing. He claims he got blood on his trainers when Marshallâs head hit the ground beside where he was standing, and his description of the crime scene was fairly accurate.â
âNot so sure about that, boss,â Tony said, studying the crime scene photos. âThere were no voids in the blood splatter pattern to indicate anyone was standing close beside or behind him.â
âInteresting,â Adam said.
âSo, whereâs he been all this time?â Julian said.
âHe claims heâs been hiding in the caretakerâs cottage at the school,â Adam said.
âYou donât sound like you believe him?â Julian said.
âIâm not sure what I believe.â Adam said. âHave you reviewed the notes from the uniformsâ door-to-door enquiries near the crime scene?â
âYeah, what are you after?â
âWas there any mention of a group of young men hanging around the substation the night of Marshallâs death or a grey car with tinted windows?â
âNope,â Julian said.
âUnfortunately, Harryâs mother let him shower while they called to let us know he was home, so any evidence on his body has gone. Sheâd also laundered his clothes and shoes before the first officers at the house thought to stop her, so Iâm not sure what forensics will find. Anyway, Iâm headed back there now. Julian, can you track down CCTV footage surrounding the Plaistow branch of McDonald's and surrounding area from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday night?â Adam stood and grabbed his jacket from the back of his chair.
âTony, can you get over to the caretakerâs cottage at the school and see what the forensics team has found? Iâll be over once Iâve sat in on the rest of Harryâs interview with DS Cho.â
âOkay, sarge, Iâll see you there.â
Adam made his way down to the garage beneath the building where heâd parked his car earlier. He pulled out and put a call through to Katâs mobile on his hands-free set.
She answered straight away. Adam could hear the rhythmic tapping of her heels as she walked.
âAdam, how are you this morning? What did Harry have to say?â
âIâm on my way back there now. We didnât get through his story fully last night.â
âOkay,â Kat said, sounding disappointed. âSo weâre no further ahead on where the money has come from?â
âNot yet, but I plan to ask about that this morning.â
âDid he say where heâd been?â
âOngoing investigation and all that, Kat,â Adam reminded her.
âYeah, but havenât I been read in since Iâm doing the forensic accounting work on him?â
âTrue, but Iâm just not sure heâs telling the truth, so I wonât muddy your version of events with misinformation.â
âNot telling the truth? What makes you think that?â
âJust a hunch.
